How to Use the Passport Size Photo Maker

Creating a photo takes four main steps.

3. Crop and Position the Photo

Drag the uploaded image until the subject sits correctly inside the crop area.

You can also:

• zoom in or out
• rotate left
• rotate right
• reset the image
• show or hide the positioning guide

The guide is only a visual aid. It does not detect a face or certify that a photograph meets biometric or government requirements.

4. Choose the Output and Download

Select JPG or PNG and create the final image.

For JPG, you can also choose:

• Very high quality
• High quality
• Medium quality
• Smaller file

If an online form specifies a maximum file size, the tool can try to keep the JPG below:

• 100 KB
• 50 KB
• 30 KB
• 20 KB
• a custom KB limit

The tool keeps your selected pixel dimensions while adjusting JPEG quality. If the requested KB limit cannot be reached within the tool’s supported quality range, it shows a warning instead of silently changing the dimensions.

Convert a Normal Photo to Passport Size

You do not need to start with an existing passport photograph.

A normal portrait can be converted into the required format by:

1. uploading the image
2. choosing the required width and height
3. positioning the face within the crop
4. creating the new image at the selected dimensions
5. downloading the result

Choose Dimensions in mm, cm, Inches or Pixels

Different forms describe image size in different ways.

One application might specify:

35 × 45 mm

while another might give:

3.5 × 4.5 cm

or a fixed number of pixels.

The tool lets you enter dimensions using:

• centimetres
• inches
• pixels

When you choose a physical unit such as mm, cm or inches, the selected DPI is used to calculate the output pixel dimensions.

Example: 35 × 45 mm at 300 DPI

A 35 × 45 mm image at 300 DPI is approximately:

413 × 531 pixels

The tool calculates this automatically as you change the size or DPI.

What Does DPI Mean?

DPI means dots per inch. In this tool, it is used to convert a physical size into output pixel dimensions.

For example, the same 35 × 45 mm physical size produces more pixels at 600 DPI than at 300 DPI.

The current options are:

• 72 DPI
• 150 DPI
• 300 DPI
• 600 DPI

If your application specifies pixel dimensions directly, choose Pixels (px) instead of relying on a physical-size conversion.

One technical limitation is worth understanding: browser-generated JPG and PNG files do not necessarily contain explicit print-DPI metadata simply because DPI was used for the size calculation. The important output from the tool is the selected pixel width and height.

Passport Size Photo Ratio

The tool also shows the aspect ratio of your selected dimensions.

For example:

35 × 45 mm

reduces to a ratio of:

7:9

A square format such as:

51 × 51 mm

has a ratio of:

1:1

Keeping the correct aspect ratio matters because stretching a photograph to force it into a different shape can distort the face.

Instead of stretching the image, the tool uses a crop frame that matches the selected output ratio.

Make a Passport Size Photo in JPG or PNG

The current tool can export your finished image in two formats.

JPG / JPEG

JPG is useful when you need:

• a smaller file
• adjustable image quality
• a maximum KB target

The target-size compressor is available for JPG output.

PNG

PNG uses lossless image encoding and can be useful when PNG is specifically required.

Because of the way PNG compression works, the current tool does not apply the JPG target-KB feature to PNG files.

Always use the file format requested by the form or authority you are submitting to.

Compress a Passport Size Photo to a Maximum KB

Some online forms specify both dimensions and a maximum image size.

For example, you may need a photograph under:

50 KB

or:

20 KB

The Passport Size Photo Maker includes optional JPG compression so you do not need to create the image here and then immediately visit a separate compressor.

Choose the maximum size before creating the photo.

The tool tests JPEG quality levels and tries to find the highest supported quality that stays within your selected maximum.

A very small KB target may not be achievable at large pixel dimensions without making the image excessively compressed. When that happens, the tool warns you rather than pretending that the requested limit has been met.

Does the Tool Change the Photo Background?

Not automatically in the current version.

The tool crops, repositions, rotates, resizes and compresses the photograph, but it does not remove the existing background or replace it with white, blue or another colour.

If your application requires a specific background, start with a suitable photograph or prepare the background before using the final image.

Requirements differ between applications, so check the instructions you were given rather than assuming that every passport-style photo needs the same background.

Is My Photo Uploaded to the Website?

The custom editing and export logic runs in your browser.

Your selected image is opened locally by the tool and processed using browser image and canvas features. The tool does not need to upload the photograph to our server or an external image-processing API in order to crop, resize and generate the downloadable file.

This statement applies to the photo editor itself. Normal website infrastructure, such as hosting, security, analytics or advertising if enabled, is separate and is explained in the site’s Privacy Policy.

Does This Tool Guarantee Passport Photo Acceptance?

No.

PassportSizePhoto.org is an independent photo utility. It is not a passport office, embassy, immigration authority or government website.

Photo requirements can vary by:

• country
• passport or visa type
• issuing authority
• online application
• examination or recruitment form
• ID document
• age of the applicant

A technically correct crop and image size does not guarantee that every other requirement has been satisfied.

How to Get a Better Result

A very small or blurred source image will not become a high-quality photograph simply by increasing its output dimensions.

An image with some room around the head and shoulders gives you more freedom to position the crop.

Avoid Stretching the Image

Use the crop and zoom controls rather than changing width and height independently in another editor.

Enter the Exact Requirements You Were Given

Do not choose 35 × 45 mm simply because it is a common option if your application asks for a different size.

Can I Make a Passport Size Photo Online from a Normal Image?

Can I Create a 35 × 45 mm Photo?

Yes. 35 × 45 mm is available as a common preset.
